Q: How good are your ears?

FAD is an audio 👂-only game in which you're guided through an underwater maze by a mysterious radio contact 📻.

Interrupting a routine dive, your submarine has just caught a massive electromagnetic pulse, knocking out all the cameras. You have only the most primitive technology on the boat and a mysterious radio contact called Marsha to guide you. How far can you get using just your ears to navigate? And who is Marsha?

What people aren't saying about this game:

The game no one was looking for!

My screen is blank, 1 star.

A real ear-opener!

I don't know what they see in this game.

The only fad that was never popular.

Hmm... I don't like the sound of that.

Note

This is my submission for GitHub Game Off 2021, and in that spirit here is the code. It is somewhat of a crazy experiment, but hope there's some fun hiding in there somewhere. Enjoy (the game, probably not the code)!

HOLY SHIT, such a hell of experience!
I felt fear, I did give up, anxiety and relieve! and the end I even questioned myself, the voice... and switched to beacon 1...

My only point would be to make it shorter and in the end show the map and you bump around

Finished it! That took so long, but I'm glad I've done it. Fantastic game, love to see more audio-only games

It's like a hearing simulator game, but you have a mental visualization of your position and orientation. You need a lot of focus, and most of the time, you need to bump into obstacles to brute force your way through because using the sensor takes twice as much time to navigate through obstacles, and there are no consequences to bumping into something. The one thing I disliked is the fact you cannot die, and it makes light of the feeling of being in a dire situation, lost in an underwater maze.

Thanks for the comment! I agree with your feedback re lack of consequences - a missed opportunity to build some tension.

fuck, I played whole thing, If i play again i am going to draw a fucking map of this game.

just played it. lot of fun.

Can’t believe I played the whole thing :D

The whole mechanics work much better than I expected from the description. Seeing a visualisation of the route in the end would be nice maybe.

Can't belive it either - nice one! I think you're in a very select group of people that have done so.

Thanks for sharing!

Visualisation/animation of route through level would be a fun thing to add, I agree! In lieu of that, if you're vaguely interested, this was the final level you nagivated: https://github.com/DouglasOrr/FAD/blob/assets/level_5.map.png
